In 1957 Rev.Fr.Rajamanickam S.J joined the department. During his 15 years of service there was a sea-change in the department. While teaching he got his Ph.D. degree. B.A and M.A Tamil courses were introduced. In 1971 Fr.Michael Irudyam S.J. , joined the department and successfully completed Ph.D. In 1973 Fr.Rajamanickam left for Loyola. His place was taken by Rev.Dr.V.M.Gnanapragasam S.J. Soon he left the institution and his place was occupied by Dr.Kamatchinathan on a contract basis. Fr.Gnanapragasam returned and assumed office as head of the department. He elevated the department to a research centre int Tamil. M.Phil was started. He introduced students to many novel subjects like Gandhian Thought and Transcedental meditation. His contribution to the development of the department was unique as it was fully engaged with innovative activities. When he retired Dr.Innaci was promoted. Soon Dr.Innaci left the institution. Mr.Ponnarasu became the Head of the department. He was a very compassionate teacher and put in 27 years of dedicated service.
Dr.S.D.Lourdu became the head of the department. But he did not continue long as he became the head of the newly created department of Folklore. Dr.Joseph Sundararajan became the head of the department of Tamil. He was succeeded by versatile Prof.P.Jayaraman. After his better service Mr.N. Sivasubramanian was the head of the department.
